BASKETBALL
PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Masco Youth Basketball Program, administered by the Boxford
Athletic Association,
is open to boys and girls in grades 1 through 8 who live in Boxford,
Middleton,
and Topsfield. We offer both an intramural program and a travel
program. Please
note that Middleton also has a basketball program for grades 1 through
4 that
is not affiliated with the BAA.
The travel season runs from early November to mid-March.
The intramural season begins the week before
Thanksgiving and usually ends the first weekend in March.
FACILITIES
Games
and practices are at Masco and the tri-town elementary schools. Please honor the usage guidelines for each
facility. Food and drinks are not
allowed in the gyms. Players, parents, and
other fans are expected to remain in the gym, except when getting a
drink of
water and transitioning to and from the parking lot.
Every child in the building must be
accompanied by an adult.
At
the beginning of the season the schools provide a list of blackout
dates when
the courts are not available for our program. Other
events may arise on short notice, requiring us to
postpone or
cancel games and/or practices. The courts
are not available on holidays, snow days, and during school vacation.
FEES
The
fee for the 2007-2008 intramural season is $35 for grades 1-2, $50 for
grades
3-4, $60 for grades 5-6, and $50 for grades 7-8. There is a separate
fee for
the travel program, which is collected after travel teams are
chosen.
There is a maximum per family cost of $150 for the intramural program,
provided
all children are registered at the same time.
Registration
is only available online by credit card from September
15 to October 6. Late registrations cannot be guaranteed
placement on a
team.
When
you register, you are asked to provide an e-mail address. Please
provide the
address of someone who checks e-mail frequently. This is the primary
method of
communication we use for the basketball program. Once you are
registered and we
have your e-mail address, we will send you information about travel
tryouts,
start dates for the intramural program, etc. We also use e-mail to
notify
parents of program cancellation due to weather, etc.
INTRAMURAL
PROGRAM
The
intramural philosophy is to encourage participation and to develop
basic
basketball skills. Teams are formed by grade level and gender. Every
effort is
made to provide evenly balanced teams. Coaches
are parent volunteers or high school
students. They are asked to observe the
general guideline of equal playing time for all players.
Tee shirts are provided for all players.
Grades 1 and 2 -- Clinic format
on Saturday
afternoons in the Masco field house.
Grades 3
and 4 -- Clinics on Sunday afternoons in the Masco
field
house. Games in the elementary schools
on Tuesdays for boys and Wednesdays for girls.
Grades 5 and 6 -- Clinics on
Saturday afternoons
in the Masco field house. Games on
Saturday mornings at Proctor or Sunday afternoons at Masco. Players who are on a travel team may also
compete in this league. Official
referees are provided.
Grades 7 and 8 -- Games in the
Masco field house
on Friday nights. Players who are on a
travel team may also compete in this league. Official
referees are provided.
TRAVEL PROGRAM
Travel
players are not required to participate in the Intramural
program. While we hope everyone will
participate in
both programs, it is no longer mandatory. If
you opt out of intramurals, the registration fee will
be applied to
your travel fee. ALL PLAYERS MUST
REGISTER ONLINE.
Tryouts
are in October. The season runs through mid-March. Player
selection is
based on tryout performance and limited to 10 to 12 players per team.
An
additional fee is required for this program. The number of teams formed
each
year is determined by interest in the program, overall ability of the
age
group, available gym time, and coaching volunteers. Most travel
teams
will have 2 practices during the week and 1 or 2 games on the weekend.
Grades
5 through 8 Girls -- Teams are
usually formed by grade level, but this depends
on the number of girls trying out each year. The girls compete in the River
Valley League, a very
competitive
league comprised of teams from the North
Shore and Merrimack Valley
regions. Home games are played on Saturdays in the Masco and Proctor
gyms. Practices are weekday evenings at
Masco and
the elementary schools. The fee is
$165. Players purchase uniforms.
Grades
5 through 8 Boys -- Teams are
formed by grade level. Boys A teams
participate in the Cape Ann
Youth Basketball League (www.capeannyouthbasketball.com) and the B
teams play
in the Eastern League (www.easternhoopleague.com).
Home games are played on Saturdays in the
Masco and Proctor gyms. Practices are
weekday evenings at Masco and the elementary schools. The fee is
$175 for Eastern League players and $195 for Cape
Ann
players. Uniforms are loaned to the
players
and must be returned at the end of the season.
TRAVEL TEAM TRYOUTS
Skills
assessments are conducted by several experienced coaches who will
evaluate
players in drills and game situations. Players are evaluated by
at least
two coaches. Coaches do not evaluate his/her child's age
group.
Attendance at tryouts is REQUIRED for team placement. Each grade
has 2
designated dates and times in case there are conflicts with other
activities. Players are encouraged to participate in both tryout
sessions.
