Summer Tournaments

BOXFORD BASEBALL SUMMER TOURNAMENTS, AGES 8 – 12

Summer baseball tournaments are held throughout our region from late June through early August for ages 8-12. These tournaments are played against top players from other towns with a competitive focus (for example: kids pitch, more aggressive base-running rules, umpires call a tighter strike zone). A tournament usually consists of a round-robin group of games in pool play, and then they go into a playoff/elimination mode with winners continuing to advance.

When does Summer Baseball Start?
Once the Spring season ends in mid-June summer teams start to practice on a regular basis to prepare to face tough competition in the tournaments. Tournaments start at the end of June and can continue through early August. Please note: final tournament schedules are often not posted until 1 to 2 weeks before the tournaments start.

How are Players and Coaches selected?
In order to be fair and transparent Boxford Baseball uses a structured process of multiple data points and an independent selection committee to choose the players and coaches for the summer teams by age group. Please note that age groups may, or may not, utilize tryouts and evaluation days to help in this process (dates to be announced)..

Player Selection occurs prior to coach selection for each age group.  Player selection is based upon 3 factors: Eligibility, Availability and Ability.

·         Eligibility refers to age (Little League determines this as of the players age as of August 31st), residence (player must reside in Boxford), and player must have participated in 60% of the regular season games.

·         Availability refers to whether the player will be available for the majority of practices and games. If a family is planning a summer vacation during the tournaments, the league, coach and parents need to make a decision about placing the player on the roster.

·         Ability is solely based on the opinion of the selection committee.  Data points for ability can include but are not limited to: winter evaluations, season statistics, Spring coach feedback, summer tryouts (if applicable), and input from coaches in the age group.

Coach Selection coaches are selected based upon the discretion of the League Director and the Baseball Board. Our goal is to reward the best, and most deserving coaches with these summer coaching assignments based upon their performance during the Spring season.

How Do I Register My Child for Summer Baseball

Spring registration includes a question to indicate if you are interested in summer baseball play.  This will be the primary indicator of the player pool.  The league may also solicit players individually if needed to fill out the rosters for age group teams at the A and B level.

Once teams are selected a registration link will be sent to players that have accepted to play summer baseball for parents to complete including payment of summer fees.

Players Assigned to Teams Based on Little League Age

Because of the competitive nature of the summer tourneys Boxford Baseball assigns players to teams based on their Little League age (not grade) which is consistent with how local leagues in our district build their teams.  There may be exceptions to this rule as judged by the player selection committee, but the general rule for summer play is to have players assigned to teams and play in tourney divisions based on their age.

Are there options for players who do not make the top tournament team for each age group
In recent years there have been tournament options for players that do not make the top team. In these cases the selection committees will utilize their process to select the top team, and also a second team to play in the alternate tourneys.

What is the typical schedule for Summer Baseball?
Summer tournament play will occur from late June thru mid July with additional opportunities to play later in the summer. The total number of tournaments played per age group will vary from 2 to 4 tournaments based on demand, in and around the North Shore area. Some tournaments may be more competitive than others.

What are the fees per player for Summer Baseball?
Cost to play is typically between $100-$125 per player to cover fees related to tournaments, uniforms, equipment, umpires and training.  There may be incremental costs to be determined if a team plays in more than 2 tournaments.

Are tryouts held for summer?
Depending on age group, and number of registrants, tryouts may be held on a to be determined date. Our goal is to get as many interested players as possible onto a team, but based on limited roster space this is not always possible.
